Participate with SPC

The Seattle Playwrights’ Collective (SPC) is always looking for new playwrights and artists to participate in our organization. If you’re one of those wayward scribes looking for a place to develop your scripts, please read below to see if we would be a good fit for your aims.

SPC is a participatory organization. What do we mean by this? We are looking for artists who want to engage our programs at every level. We try to cultivate an environment where playwrights support each other by participating in workshops, attending readings, helping with productions, and contributing to our administrative procedures.

However, if this sounds like too much of a commitment, fear not. Weactually have two levels of membership.

Core Playwrights
These are playwrights who make a full commitment to our company. By being active participants, they are allowed access to our scheduling calendar to book workshop slots, enjoy preference when we plan our season of First Look Readings, and are allowed first access to slots for our annual Page to Stage Short Play Festival.

Affiliate Members & Visitors
Playwrights who cannot make a full commitment are free to attend our workshop meetings, but we can only read their scripts if there is time available. Feel free to contact us or check our workshop calendar to see if we’ll have time to read your play.

Our Process – The Pipeline
SPC believes play development is a process of writing, receiving feedback, and revising. We do not prescribe solutions or attempt to re-write plays. Instead we engage in a supportive discussion with the aim of helping the playwright in his or her revision process.

All plays first go through our workshop meetings before they can graduate to any of our other programs.

Once the play has completed the workshop stage, the playwright may then submit it to move forward to our First Look Reading series, where we recruit actors and a director to rehearse and perform the script in a concert style reading before an audience.

Core Playwrights may also submit their short plays to our annual Page to Stage Festival, a fully produced evening of theatre designed to represent the voices and talents of our member playwrights.

In the future, we also plan to implement a summer festival featuring the best of our First Look series. These plays will receive fully staged readings with a longer rehearsal process and more technical support.

By taking plays through this pipeline of development, we hope not only to produce fully realized plays at the end, but we also hope to improve the skills and expertise of our core playwrights.

So if you’re interested in joining us, please feel free to send SPC an email to find out more or just drop by one of our workshop meetings.
